A short-term business loan fits a Madera, CA restaurant or shop when the cost it pays for earns its money back within months: a large stock order, a repair that reopens a line, or payroll before an invoice is paid. Terms are counted in months, and payments can be daily, weekly or monthly. Elkmont forwards short-term funding requests to partners for their review and any offer.

How short repayment schedules work
A short-term loan pays one sum up front and is paid back over months rather than years. Many short-term agreements take payments weekly or even every business day by automatic debit, and the cost is stated in one of two ways: as an interest rate on the balance, or as a fixed fee added to the amount. The difference matters when the loan is paid off early.
Illustration only, invented figures: a nine-month shop loan of $24,000. At an annual rate of 15% with monthly payments, each payment is $2,836.09 and the nine total $25,525. At the same rate with 39 weekly payments, each is $651.54 and the total is $25,410, $115 less than the monthly version because the balance falls a little sooner. Under a fixed-fee agreement that adds 12.5%, the shop owes $27,000 in 39 weekly payments of about $692.31, a fee of $3,000.
With an interest-rate loan, paying early saves the interest not yet charged, unless the agreement adds a prepayment charge. With a fixed fee, the whole fee can be owed even if the balance is cleared early; the agreement says whether any discount applies. Asking for the payoff figure at a few dates before signing shows the difference plainly.
Uses that suit a short-term loan in Madera, CA
The test for a short-term loan is whether the money comes back inside the term. Uses that can pass it:
- A stock order bought for a customer order or contract that is already signed
- A repair that puts a closed fryer line, cooler or service bay back to work
- Payroll during the wait for a large invoice that has been billed
- Materials for a job with a deposit already received and a final payment due on completion
Uses that fail it: equipment or movable furnishings that will work for years, or a loss that recurs every month. Those purchases belong on longer agreements, fixed property work is excluded, and a recurring shortfall needs a change in the business, not a loan.
Small employers are the majority among the county's employer establishments, and a gap of a few weeks weighs on a small payroll: 1,336 of the 2,366 employer establishments in Madera County, CA had fewer than five employees in 2023, 56.5% (County Business Patterns). Self-employment is part of the picture too: 11.0% of the county's employed residents were self-employed (American Community Survey 2020-2024, margin of error plus or minus 1.2 points). A working capital loan is the short-term product for these gaps, and its page covers how it is repaid.
Short-term loan or credit line?
A credit line and a short-term loan solve related problems in different ways. The table sets them side by side.
| Feature | Short-term loan | Business line of credit |
|---|---|---|
| How the money arrives | One lump sum | Draws up to a limit, when needed |
| What it costs | Interest or a fixed fee on the full amount | Interest on the amount drawn |
| Payments | Fixed, often weekly or daily | Change with the balance drawn |
| After payoff | New money needs a new request | The limit is available again |
| Fits | One known cost with a clear payback date | Repeated gaps of different sizes |
A restaurant that runs short a few times a year may get more from a business line of credit than from repeated short loans; a shop with one large order to fill may prefer the fixed schedule. A third option, for a business with steady card sales, is a card-sales advance, collected as a share of daily settlements rather than on a schedule; the merchant cash advance page explains how providers collect it.
Comparing total payback
Comparing offers by their payments alone hides what they cost. Total payback, the amount that leaves the account by the end, is the figure to put side by side.
Illustration only, invented figures: a store needs $18,000 for about four months to fill a large order. A six-month short-term loan at an annual rate of 18% has payments of $3,159.45 and a total of $18,957, so it costs $957. A 120-day draw at 13% annually produces $769.32 of interest. A card-sales advance of the same $18,000 with a factor of 1.25 means $22,500 is collected, a cost of $4,500.
In this example the credit line costs the least, the short-term loan sits in the middle and the advance costs the most. The order holds only for these invented figures: a line that is not yet in place, a fee on each draw or a different factor can change it. Any offer can be laid out the same way before signing, and the request form starts a comparison with funding partners. The Elkmont article index has more Madera, CA examples by trade.
