Home builders, plumbers and finish carpenters can each send a request; Elkmont places it with funding partners, who review and decide.
Machines, trailers, draw gaps and the cash around a bonded bid each fit a different funding type; county counts and invented loan and lease figures show how.

Skid Steers, Dump Trailers and Bid Bonds: what Madera, CA contractors bring to a lender
A skid steer and a dump trailer are equipment, with serial numbers, dealer quotes and resale value, so they can be financed or leased on their own. A bid bond is not. It is issued by a surety company to guarantee that a contractor will sign the contract if it wins the bid, and Elkmont does not arrange bonds. What funding can cover is the cash around a bid: the working capital a surety may want to see on the balance sheet, or the materials and wages of the first weeks after the job is won.
For the machines, a partner looks for the dealer quote or the used unit's hours and condition, the contractor's bank statements and tax returns, a list of jobs under contract, and any equipment already financed. For the working capital, the same records plus the contract and its draw or payment schedule.
Questions for a lender before a Madera, CA contractor finances skid steers, dump trailers and bid bonds
Before a contractor finances a machine or takes on a larger job, it helps to put these questions to Elkmont and, later, to the partner:
- Is the skid steer for one job or for every job, and would renting it for that job cost less?
- Does the payment fit the months when draws are slow to arrive?
- Will a partner accept a used machine, and how many hours is too many?
- Can working capital for the first weeks of a bonded job sit beside the equipment loan?
- Does an existing credit line need to stay open for supplier accounts?
The first question is worth answering honestly. A machine bought for a single job can cost more over its loan term than renting it for the weeks that job runs.
Planning skid steers, dump trailers and bid bonds as one of the Madera County, CA contractors
County figures show how the trade is built. Madera County, CA counted 308 construction establishments with paid employees in 2023; 208 were specialty trade contractors such as plumbers, electricians and finish carpenters, 83 were building contractors, and the other 17, by subtraction, were heavy and civil engineering contractors. Of the 308, 210 (68.2%) had fewer than five employees (County Business Patterns, NAICS 23, 236 and 238).
Residential permits give builders and the trades that follow them one measure of local work: permits authorized 1,109 new housing units in the county in 2023, and in 2025, 1,144 of the 1,247 units (91.7%) were in single-unit buildings (Census Building Permits Survey). Separately, Nonemployer Statistics counted 809 construction businesses without paid employees in 2024, 498 of them specialty trades.
Funding skid steers, dump trailers and bid bonds in Madera, CA
Illustration only, invented figures: a $68,000 compact track loader with a bucket and forks, financed for 60 months at an annual rate of 9%, costs $1,411.57 a month; the 60 payments come to $84,694, including $16,694 of interest. A $14,500 dump trailer added to the same request raises the amount but not the number of documents.
The draw schedule is the other half of the plan. Also invented: a builder with $11,800 of biweekly crew payroll waits 45 days for a draw. That invoice delay can span 3 or 4 paydays, equivalent to $35,400 to $47,200 in crew wages. Working capital or a line of credit drawn for those weeks keeps the crew paid until the draw arrives.
Skid Steers, Dump Trailers and Bid Bonds near Madera, CA: loan or lease?
Illustration only, invented figures: the same loader on a 48-month lease at $1,415.00 a month with an $8,500 purchase option at the end costs $76,420 if the contractor buys it out, $8,274 less than the loan example above. The lease total is lower here, but the contractor pays the buyout in one sum at the end, and the lease may carry hour limits.
A dump trailer is a simple item to finance with a loan. A bid bond, as above, cannot be leased or financed; it comes from a surety. A contractor deciding between the two for the loader can compare the totals, the hour limits and whether the machine will still be needed when the lease ends. Equipment financing has more on loans and leases side by side.
